About Susan Valencia

Hi, I’m Susan (but please call me Susie)! I’m a Certified Educational Planner (CEP) and the founder of Valencia Educational Consulting. With over 20 years of experience in education and counseling, I’m passionate about helping students and families navigate the college admissions journey with confidence and clarity.

A Little About My Background

I earned my Master’s degree in Counselor Education from Mississippi State University and my Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and Ocean Studies from the University of San Diego. My journey started as a school counselor, working with elementary and middle school students, and later as a children’s and family therapist. When my youngest child entered third grade, I returned to education as a High School College Counselor at Linfield Christian School in Temecula, California. During my time there, I gained firsthand knowledge of the admissions process from both the student and institutional perspectives.

In 2020, I transitioned to private consulting, completing advanced training with the Independent Educational Consultants Association (IECA) Summer Training Institute. Today, as a member of both the IECA and the Higher Education Consultants Association (HECA), I stay current on trends and developments in the world of college admissions.

What Sets Me Apart

Every student I work with gets my full attention and a customized approach. I believe in building strong connections with students and their families, ensuring the process feels supportive and manageable. My goal is to make college applications less stressful—giving parents peace of mind and students the tools they need to succeed.

Why I Do This

As a mom of three, I’ve experienced the ups and downs of college admissions firsthand. My own children have taken different paths: choosing schools, switching majors, studying abroad, and tackling the challenges of academic and personal growth. This perspective helps me guide families through this exciting (and sometimes overwhelming) process with empathy, professionalism, and practical advice. Watching my students discover their strengths and thrive in their college journeys is what keeps me motivated.

Beyond Work

When I’m not helping students, you can find me paddle surfing, practicing yoga, volunteering with exotic animals, or tackling a good puzzle. I’ve even had the honor of raising animals like a cheetah and a yellow lab as part of my volunteer work at Wild Wonders in Bonsall, California. I believe in lifelong learning and encourage my students to explore their passions and interests as they plan for the future.
